I found a box of drawings from when I was a child. Found some really amazing stuff, and others that should have been thrown away. But I can see some clear road maps to why I create the certain things I do now that I am older. I remember my Dad never giving us coloring books. We always had to use our imagination. I think it payed off, because us children have wonderful imaginations.

The Number Purple once made a mistake that wasn't too horrible, but wasn't very nice either. Clouded with anxiety and fear of the known and the not it was made in an instant. Looking back it seemed pointless, even silly at times. But still the way the wind blew made the choice long lasting.

I entered a drawing contest for Redvines today. It would be so amazingly awesome if I won, but even if I didn't, that would be okay. Doing this little drawing helped me fall in love with Prisma colored pencils again. I feel a project on a much larger scale in the works... :)

Believe it or not this 20x18 only took 1 1/2 hours to paint... I was surprised myself. But its true. It felt good to break out the oils again. But I realized that I am going to have to get more if I do another soon. I am running very VERY low! Eek! Well enjoy.

So I just watched a great photoshop tutorial on digital coloring and thought I could give it a try. This is what I came up with, and will be doing a comic of this little guy for my art class. It was really easy to do too! All you need is some patience and time, but the process is really very simple. Give it a try! <3

Well, Independence Day was a success. Hundreds of dollars was spent for the right to show off who has the best fireworks on the street. I can honestly say, no one had a finale like we did. I was telling my stepdad that the 4th of July is a time when gorwn men can act tough and buy these giant fireworks and then run away screaming when they light them off. I saw plenty of that. All and all it was good. I got some great firework shots that I uploaded to flickr and we got to eat at Jay Barry's. Super yummy.

In "The Voice of the Valley" today I noticed that the obituaries and wedding announcement are on the same page. What a weird coincidence I thought, when I was glancing over the page. But was it really a coincidence? Love is lost now a days. Sometimes people find what they think is love when really they find the idea of love. Not a true connection with the person they chose to spend the rest of their days with, but the idea of that. Love is dead, it seems.

I went to Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium a couple days ago. It was a beautiful day and very interesting. Of course, I took a bunch of photos there. Some are on my flickr, but this one seems to be the favorite since uploaded yesterday. I call it "Busy Bodies."

It was this giant fish tank filled with all sorts of fish, even sharks. They all seem to be living peacfully and well. The colors as you can see were very beautiful. Enjoy.

I've taken the liberty of teaching young children about the importance of art. Especially the art of the great masters. Art is just not being taught in schools very much anymore. Even when I was in Elementary School, art was overlooked as nothing more than "creative projects," done to waste time before the bell rang.

Art is a way of life. A History. I feel that if I can get even a small number of children to develop their talents now and appreciate what art is, then with time they can bring others to love it as much as I do. The next generation, the art generation.

Here are some examples of their work. All the pieces were done my kindergarten aged children. Van Gogh's Starry Night Sky was their subject matter. Enjoy.

The Self Portrait Experience.

Vincent Van Gogh created over fourteen self portraits within three years of his life. This is on top of the handfuls of other painting he also produced. Some think that Van Gogh's creativity was too much for even himself, that all he could do was create, resulting in why he created so many paintings of himself. I believe he painted so many of himself so that when he is dead the rest of the world would have no choice but to know his face. He was never a popular artist when he was alive, his fame came shortly after his death. It is very hard to ignore 864 oil paintings left behind with no one to claim them as their own. The self portrait. Who would have thought that Vincent was so vain?

I thought for this being my first blog, I would introduce myself as vainly as I could. Through some of my own self portraits. Both through paintings and photography. This is the easiest way for me to explain where this blog is coming from and the type of work I do. So click it or ticket people, cause this adventure is going to be an interesting one.

I would shake your hand if we weren't in cyber land, so my name will have to suffice for now. My full name is Michelle Erin Sutterfield. I was born in Utah and currently live in Washington. I am a well fed art student that actually does quite well financially. I guess being afraid of debt comes in handy when spending money. I don't remember the first self portrait I ever did, but I remember trashing many throughout my younger years. Understanding that I couldn't create an identical picture of myself was hard to understand when I was 10, especially when I tried so hard.

I really started falling into my style my first year of college. Bellevue College is a great place for finding what the heck is going an all around you. This is where I created my first self portrait I actually liked. It was done with Charcoal, not my medium of choice incidentally. My teacher gave us the instruction to find a place where you might glance at yourself and to draw what you see.

Through my camera's eyes I found how easy it was to make an instant self portrait. It was identical to me, it had to be, it was a picture. If I couldn't draw myself exactly the way I looked then I would simply take a picture. I thought I had discovered the trick. It wasn't until Photo 101 when all my vain was broken down into the thoughts I had before. My teacher explained to the class that even a photograph isn't a true self portrait. Just because it is a photo does not make it documentary. There is opinion in even the simplest snap shots. Why that crop? What was going on outside the frame that was not photographed? Why that picture? There is no such thing as documentary. There is no such thing as an exact image.

So when he told us that our job was to create a real self portrait, of the people others don't see, I had to think. Who am I? Am I a self portrait? And which of the many self portraits I had created was really me? I decided that all of my portraits were me. It is one giant self portrait that gets added to everyday I create. Not just pictures of me, but of everything I do, there I put bits and pieces of me in everything.

I just hope that when I die, all the pieces I leave behind with have enough of me so that others can see my real self portrait, even if I don't get the chance.
